Description
Driftwood adorns the beach as the sun rises over the Gulf of Mexico and Sanibel Island, Florida. Sanibel Island is located just off the west coast of Florida near Fort Myers, and is accessible by a long causeway. It is world renowned for its beaches and the abundance of its shells. Until a causeway was built in the 1960s, it was accessible only by boat, including the ferry. Once the causeway was constructed, the residents realized it was only a matter of time until the island experienced the rampant development seen in the rest of the state's coastlines. In 1974, they passed a comprehensive plan and subsequent ordinance that restricted development; today, almost seventy percent of the island is preserved in conservation areas, including J. N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, a haven for birds and other wildlife. As a result of the residents' foresight, much of the island resembles what long-time natives remember of Old Florida.

Thanks for the feature, Christopher, and I did nominate a fine image by another artist in the discussion a few days ago.
