Description
Recent hurricanes carved out an inlet on Pea Island south of the Oregon Inlet in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, washing out Highway 12. As the water receded, it left these pools and a temporary bridge now covers the gap in the highway. This is a recurring challenge on this narrow barrier island that sits between the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound. This is just before sunset, looking toward Pamlico Sound in the distance. The smooth surface of the pools reflects the clouds and the intensifying colors of the sky as the sun sinks over the sound. When Highway 12 washes out, the people living on Hatteras Island in the south are cut off from driving to the northern Outer Banks and vice versa, and transportation is limited to boat or ferry.
