Description
Above a white fence, red dairy barns stand out on a sunny day in Upstate New York. New York is the third top producer of dairy products in the United States. This farm is located in Yates County in the Finger Lakes region, about 50 miles south of Rochester. This predominantly rural area is dominated by farms and, nearer the lakes, wineries. Many of the farms are run by the Amish community, who sell their dairy, vegetable, and fruit produce onsite or in the nearby towns. Villages, towns, or small cities in this area between Canandaigua and Keuka Lakes include Canandaigua, Naples, Penn Yann, Hammondsport, and Brockport. The five or so major Finger Lakes were carved out of the landscape about 10,000 years ago during the last Ice Age. They are popular recreation destinations for people living in Rochester and other areas.
