Description
Just east of here was the Falls of the Ohio, a series of large rapids that boaters on this stretch of the Ohio River had to ford to get around. A dam has tamed the rapids but the name remains. The Lewis and Clark Expedition began on this river a mile west of here at the site of George Rogers Clark's cabin, in Clarksville, Indiana. On the far left is a portion of the world-renowned exposed fossil beds that were an ancient seabed in the Devonian era. This area was used by Native Americans to fish, hunt, and bury their dead for thousands of years before Clark and other settlers arrived.
