The sun rises over the Hatteras Island dunes on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The Outer Banks are a series of narrow barrier islands running north-south off the east coast of North Carolina. They have been battered by hurricanes and other storms throughout their history and have served as the graveyard for many ships, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries. This area is part of the protected Cape Hatteras Island National Seashore and the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge and, with the possible exception of Ocracoke Island to the south, is the most beautiful stretch of beach on the Outer Banks. The dunes in this area were re-formed by two recent hurricanes, and when I went looking for these fences last spring, I could not find them; apparently, they were buried by the storms. I grew up exploring the natural world along the Ohio River and in the woods on my father's farm in Southern Indiana. While studying environmental planning in the Architecture School at the University of Virginia, I added an interest in architecture to my love of natural landscapes. My work often is an exploration of how these two subjects interact together in natural light. Most of my images are from near my current home of Alexandria, Virginia, my former home of southern Indiana, and travels to various places in the U.S. with occasional foreign travel.
